Title: Time to Watch Me

Component 3: Managing Classroom Procedures

Grade Level: 1-3

Group Size: Whole class

Source: http://www.ilovethatteachingidea.com/ideas/032404_get_the_noise_out.htm

Explanation of Idea: This idea deals with the noise level in a classroom during transitions from each subject. This idea is used every day when students get noisy during a transition or an activity. The idea it relates to component 3 with a focus on management of transitions. This idea is intended for students to understand when I do four motions it’s time to focus on the next subject or to get back to work. This idea is used by me to bring my classroom back together to start a new topic. I will clap my hand to gain attention. My students will repeat my clap. Then I will point to my eyes then my middle chest which will signal the students to watch me. These signals will be demonstrated in the beginning of the year so the students know what they mean and how I will use them. It allows the students to “shake it out”. (What I mean by this if my students are getting a little too excited I will clap stomp and wiggle a body part the students will stand up clap stomp and wiggle the same body part.)This allows the students to “shake out” some energy before they sit down to start or finish an activity. Having my students do this allows the students to take a break and refocus. When it is time to end an activity I will clap lighter so the students know it’s time to clean up and calm down.

Assessment Tools: “Shake it Out” allows me to evaluate how well my students transition and if they are affective. This idea allows the students to gain their own attention by repeating my signals. This idea can be used quickly without confusion if the students do not understand why I clapped my hands they will stop what they are doing and I gained their attention to transition them to where I need them to be. After a few times with the signals the students will be able to catch on easily.
